Educational Videos for the Science and Prevention of Wildfires

In the summer of 2022, Next Vista for Learning began working with CAL FIRE to help students across California become better prepared for and educated about wildfires.

This project uses digital video in ways that can make learning more active and engaging, and at the same time help produce materials that address the threats wildfire poses. Specifically, experts from CAL FIRE, the California State Parks, the Forestry Challenge, the Santa Cruz County Office of Education, and others are helping create materials that students interpret in creative videos for others in their age range. Teachers are being trained to help students use and create video effectively, and are welcoming experts into their classrooms through Zoom-enabled webinars.

How to Take Part

Your school can take part in this project in a variety of ways. The content created will be organized and made accessible for anyone who can use it with students. More active involvement includes having students engage in creating videos and sharing what they create with the larger community.

Those interested in learning more should describe their classes/schools and point(s) of interest using our Contact Us form.

Next Vista for Learning thanks CAL FIRE for the support needed to launch this project and build a template for helping students across California and everywhere face and respond to threats like wildfires. The people of the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) are dedicated to the fire protection and stewardship of over 31 million acres of California’s privately-owned wildlands. The Department also provides varied emergency services in 36 of the State’s 58 counties via contracts with local governments.

Educational Videos for the Science and Prevention of Wildfires is part of California Climate Investments, a statewide initiative that puts billions of Cap-and-Trade dollars to work reducing greenhouse gas emissions strengthening the economy, and improving public health and the environment – particularly in disadvantaged communities.
