A Reindeer Career
A lot of people throughout history have dedicated their lives to animals in some way. Maybe they raised sheep, or rode horses, or fished from boats. For a variety of reasons, though, it’s a good guess that an ever-smaller percentage of humanity focuses on animals for their direct livelihood.
In this story, you’ll meet Davaajav, a man whose family herds reindeer in Mongolia.
Try to imagine at least five possible futures for Davaajav and his family. What is in the video, or in other research you do on reindeer (also called caribou) that supports each idea for a possible future path?
Are there jobs in your community that seem to have fewer and fewer people doing them? Do jobs have life spans?
Whatever you want to become in terms of a career, think not simply of how relevant it might be in a changing world, but perhaps also how you can combine that interest with something else. A creative combination may make for a much brighter future.
