Creativity from Constraints
What if there were a contest for architects and students to design housing that is affordable, dignifies inhabitants, and uses cutting-edge building technology?
What if six winners were chosen, and you could see a video that tells their stories to celebrate their thinking?
In March of 2024, a group called Initiative 99 released the winners of just such a competition, and you can see them in this video.
A fascinating piece of this competition is the constraint of building something within a specific price range.
What kind of competition might you have at your school that does something similar? For example, how might you decorate a gym for a dance for no more than $20? How would you invite groups to share their ideas so you are tapping the creativity of students who might not normally be involved at the school?
