How to Take Part: Wildfire Science And Prevention Project

Are you ready to learn more? Whether you are a student, a teacher, or an expert, you’ve come to the right place!

Students

Choose any of the video prompts that we have made and gathered, and create a new version that you think will be interesting to others your age. That is, be true to the information in the prompt you watch, but deliver it in a style that taps your creativity. Perhaps you’ll create several pieces of art and narrate them, or screenshare a set of slides, or tell the story from the perspective of a tree or creature! We want to see what you can do, and will share the best ones with classrooms and communities all over (and beyond) California. Visit the prompts page for how to create your videos for the project.

Teachers

The video prompts this project has created and gathered are designed to help your students better understand the science of, prevention of, and preparation for wildfires. While you are welcome to use the prompts as material for your students, we would love to have your students engage in the more powerful active learning of creating their own videos. Please contact us to learn more about how to get involved, including the added (and free!) benefits of associated speakers via Zoom and professional development opportunities.

Experts

Firefighters, foresters, researchers, state parks interpreters, and others: we want your help building our library of video prompts for the classrooms involved in our project! You don’t need to know how to create videos yourselves (though it’s fine if you do), and if you are willing to spend a little time on Zoom with a member of our team, we can use what you tell us to help students learn about wildfires through the active learning that is the focus of this project. Next Vista for Learning thanks CAL FIRE for the support needed to launch this project and build a template for helping students across California and everywhere face and respond to threats like wildfires. The people of the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) are dedicated to the fire protection and stewardship of over 31 million acres of California’s privately-owned wildlands. The Department also provides varied emergency services in 36 of the State’s 58 counties via contracts with local governments.
