from Brian Ravizza (Hillbrook School)

Overview: This is a planner for a wildfire curriculum that will culminate with a project where students make a video to teach the public about wildfire. In the process of making a video from various prompts, students will have the opportunity to engage with experts, while receiving and applying feedback. This is a meaningful and enriching learning experience that allows students to reach beyond the walls of their classroom while interacting with the greater community around them. The various “milestones” outlined in the curriculum planner can be done in any order and teachers can feel free to choose any of the lessons given their time and interest.

The following is a digital project (labeled by grade level) that teachers can edit, revise, and deliver to students in a number of ways. The project is divided into 5 weeks and packaged on a Google Doc. Just make a copy and edit. Teachers can add the linked lesson one week at a time.

The first part of the project focuses on learning about the history and science behind wildfire prevention, to align with state standards in geography and history. Also included are activities to build skills around asking good questions, interviewing experts, and creating informational videos from what we’ve learned. The second part of this project is sharing our video creations to help teachers and students around California learn about wildfire prevention. This authentic piece of the project will be exciting to see, as your students become the teachers for many others!
